A Smile Fell in the Grass
Inspired by the life and works of Sylvia Plath, The Paper Birds' first ever production was an experimental mix of live music, poetry, movement and story-telling. An autobiographical and fragmented response to Plath’s work and words, the show was a 50 minute exploration of the many roles of women.
Premiered in Experimental Theatre, Bretton Hall, 2002.
"In A Smile Fell in the Grass, the company of six women chose to evoke Plath's world rather than directly quote her words. Skilfully accompanied by the pianist Shane Durrant, they used movement and materials such as water, flour and grass to tell stories of women in roles imposed by men."
